It is not easy to take positives from South Africa's energy situation. Power outages - known locally as 'load-shedding' - have been progressively more frequent in recent years as the scandal-plagued utility Eskom has struggled to maintain its fleet of aging coal-fired power stations. Blackouts are expected on 250 days in 2023, with some areas forced to ensure up to 12 hours at a time without power.
